As a player himself, he knows what it takes to compete at the highest level and pass that experience with all of his players.

Jerrick R. Cabrales was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. He moved to Houston, Texas in 2008 to study and graduated, majoring in Business/Finance management, from University of Houston. JOELLEN SAULSBERRY

California native JoEllen Saulsberry came to Houston in 1993 as a senior transfer to the University of Houston to finish her playing career. After completing her eligibility at the University of Houston, she stayed on staff as a student assistant for one season.

JoEllen began coaching club for Houston Juniors in 1993 and Texas Elite in 1994. In 1995, JoEllen accepted the varsity head coaching position at St. Pius X High School, which advanced into a full-time registrar and head coaching opportunity in 1997. After coaching a club in Houston for two years, it was clear that JoEllen had her vision, and Texas Tornados was born in 1995 with a former teammate and the help of some former parents; we started with four teams and a big dream.

Within five years, this concept expanded to over 20+ teams practicing at several locations. Growth dictated the call for a facility, so we began searching for a site with Fred Caldwell's help. In 2001, the Tornados found and purchased a 7-acre tract and developed a business plan to shop several banks from 2002-2004. The dream took almost three years to complete, from concept to build. In December 2004, a Tornados home was made, opened its doors to the community, and catapulted to becoming a top club in Houston and a top 10 club in the nation.

JoEllen has been in charge of developing and implementing the club training philosophy for the players and the coaches over the years, and it is her passion. She was the head training coach and recruiting coordinator until she passed along those duties to employees to enhance the facility programs. She is currently the Facility Coordinator and Executive Club Director. JoEllen has 30 plus years of coaching experience and has qualified and coached many successful Junior Olympics teams, including 1st place open finishes at the Mid East Qualifier, Colorado Crossroads Qualifier, Las Vegas Invitational, a first-place finish in the AAU Grand Prix, during her coaching career. In 2023, JoEllen's team earned a bronze medal at GJNC.

JoEllen's philosophy of coaching and developing young ladies is in volleyball and in life lessons. JoEllen has mentored thousands of young girls in the community and believes that team sports' life lessons are way more important than the sport itself. JoEllen had a very influential high school basketball coach that changed her life, and through her experience as a young athlete, she knew that passing on that love and passion through volleyball was her life's mission as well. How you play volleyball does not define who you are as a person, but it helps shape the person you will later become. You gain valuable life experiences such as teamwork, success, failure, disappointment, adversity, and leadership skills. These are tools that today's youth will use as students, employees, friends, and parents throughout their lives. Through JoEllen's vision and philosophy, the Tornados experience will exceed your expectations and be more valuable than any win-- loss record.
